Film Project

This project set out to create two short films, entirely made by students side from the director, producer and d.o.p. I was briefed to assist in the design of ‘Back The Way We Played’ set in the 90s in a music venue and to lead the design of ‘Tested’ set in the waiting room of a sexual health clinic with slight high-tech edge (think Apple store meets the doctor’s office). The location for the second film proved to be a challenge as a space hadn’t been found until late in the process, and the room that was chosen in the end had skylights which we covered with bin bags and too many doors which I hid with exhibition boards. I kept my design flexible, developing concepts that could easily be moved and rearranged to fit the space according to the director’s wants. Practically, I learnt a lot about how film production works, making prop references and lists, lighting for film, prop sourcing, managing continuity and responding to a space’s architecture. I learnt a valuable lesson in not being too precious with my work and staying flexible to adjustments.
